A decade after their last national selection, Greece has confirmed it will stage its new national selection on January 29th.
187 options for Greece to consider
Following on from Marina Satti‘s 11th place finish in Malmö, Greek broadcaster ERT announced a new national final. The selection was open to all interested artists; the first time ERT had done so in over twenty years.
A submissions window opened shortly after the announcement, and in an announcement released on Friday (November 15th), ERT confirmed that 187 songs were submitted to the selection. The delegation now has to listen to the submitted entries and reduce the number down to anywhere between eight and ten songs.
As well as this, ERT announced that the national final will take place on Wednesday, January 29th. However, no specific details on where the selection will be held have been released. The last time Greece hosted a national final was in 2015, when Maria Elena Kyriakou with “One Last Breath”. The final was created in collaboration with music label MAD, and resulted in Greece finishing in 15th place in Vienna.
Greece’s Eurovision journey
In 1974, Greece made its debut to the Eurovision Song Contest with “Krasi, thalassa ke t’agori mou” which placed 11th. Since then they have participated on 44 occasions (41 of which made the Grand Final), and have won once, in 2005.
Greece’s most recent Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Marina Satti with the song “Zari”. Following her performance, Greece qualified for the Grand Final, finishing in 11th place in the Grand Final in Malmö. She earned a total of 126 points, of which 41 were from the national juries and 85 were from the televoters.
