Tonight, NeonoeN made history as the first winner of Montesong, the county’s first national final since 2019, and will represent Montenegro at Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland; being the first Montenegrin entry to participate at Eurovision since Vladana in 2022.

Neonoen will represent Montenegro in Basel

Montesong 2024 was originally set to take place over two nights, before being whittled down to a single evening show. Clickbait was one of the 36 entries to be submitted to the contest that saw 16 perform. This evening’s contest was hosted by Marko Todorovic and Vladana, with Lazar Radulovic and Andrea Sekularac acting as greenroom hosts. Danijel Popović opened the show with his 1983 Yugoslavian entry Džuli, with a montage of former Montenegrin entries, and interviews with several former entrants including one member of No Name, and Sergej Ćetković. Vladana rounded off the opening with a rendition of her 2022 entry in Italian.

Interval acts consisted of Sergej Ćetković singing his 2014 entry Moj Svijet, a rapper, and Emmelie De Forest singing her Eurovision 2013 winner Only Teardrops. An array of awards were handed out to the participants.

Montenegro’s Eurovision Journey

Before Montenegro announced its return to the Eurovision Song Contest for 2025, they had a scattered appearance at the competition.

There has been a Montenegrin presence at the Eurovision Song Contest as far back as 1983, when the nation was a part of Yugoslavia. Montenegrin entries went on to represent Yugoslavia in 1983 and 1984, placing 4th and 18th respectively. Similarly, the nation also sent an entry as part of Serbia and Montenegro in 2005, placing 7th with No Name’s “Zauvijek moja”.

As an independent nation, Montenegro debuted in 2007 with Steven Faddy’s “Ajde, kroci”. This began a string of non-qualifications, until their first appearance in a Grand Final in 2014. Montenegro’s best result came in 2015 with Knez’s “Adio”, scoring 44 points and placing 13th. Their most recent appearance in the Contest was in 2022, when Vladana finished in 17th place in the semi-final with 33 points with her song “Breathe”.
