As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Malta, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “SERVING” by Miriana Conte.

Our thoughts on “SERVING”

In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “SERVING”

What did the other team members think of “SERVING”?

Molly: This song has grown on me a lot and this may gain an audience with people who like quirky songs. It’s such an earworm and I have caught myself singing it a lot and this could work well for Malta since it’s more likely to have listeners remember it. The song is quirky and flashy which lines up well with how well Miriana sings and utilizes her stage presence to suit the entire package of the performance.

Kittens: There’s something just a bit ‘off’ about ‘Serving’. Maybe it’s just that I’m a bit less into this kind of music. I can see why a lot of people find it to be fun, but I do feel let down and disappointed by the whole package. The whole reasoning of it feels like a dare, a ‘go on, do your worst, whatever you do we’ll flip it on it’s head’, which is fine but I feel less engaged by the ‘Serving’ hype machine during every passing moment. In all of this hype, the song itself gets forgotten, and it just feels like an average song without the ‘trick’. So it’s fine, just not for me.

Angus: ‘Serving’ serves up a good amount of well-produced pop. I can appreciate the skill and effort that went into crafting this piece. That being said, this song is not something that would usually appeal to me and it does nothing to the formula it follows that makes me want to relisten or pay attention. This isn’t helped that both the original version of the song and this reworked one feel like they leave some potential on the table. All in all a largely okay song that isn’t for me and ends up feeling like a bit less than the sum of its parts.

Malta’s Eurovision Journey

Malta made its Eurovision debut in 1971, with Joe Grech performing “Marija I-Maltija” (Maria the Maltese Lass), finishing 18th with 52 points. Malta did not participate in Eurovision from 1975 until 1991, when they returned with the song “Could It Be” by Paul Giordimaina and Georgina, finishing 12th with 32 points. Since then, Malta has been at every Eurovision and finished in the top 10 an impressive 12 times. Their best result is second place, which they’ve achieved twice. The first time was in 2002, when Ira Losco sang “7th Wonder,” and the second time in 2005 with Chiara’s “Angel.”

Sarah Bonnici represented Malta in 2024 with her song “Loop”. When all was said and done, Sarah placed 16th in the second semifinal, garnering 13 points.
