As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Estonia, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Espresso Macchiato” by Tommy Cash.
Our thoughts on “Espresso Macchiato”
In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Espresso Macchiato”
What did the other team members think of “Espresso Macchiato”?
Molly: This song is a very fun and memorable song that has grown on me over time. His voice is very unique it helps add to the studio and live version. I am excited to see how they adapt this performance to the Eurovision stage because there is a lot that can be done to make this become a standout and make use of Tommy Cash’s popularity and talent. This however could get overshadowed by songs within the similar category this year.
Daniel: My mother told me if I have nothing nice to say, not to say it at all, but I’m a grown up now, so I can make my own decisions. I genuinely don’t see any merits to this at all. We should’ve moved past butchering languages for lols years ago, the over-confident stage persona is tiring and not in a ‘you love to hate them way’ and Tommy Cash seems to only be interested in the contest at all because it’s what his mates have been up to in recent years, but what differentiates him from Käärijä and Joost are songs with good messages that people can actually get behind. I’ve been an Estonia fan for the last few years but this is right near the bottom of my rankings.
Angus: Tommy Cash comes with a song that definitely is memorable and sticks out of the pack this year. The problem with anything that has comedic elements (note, I am NOT calling this a joke entry) is that the comedy needs to land for it to work. And if it doesn’t land with you, it gets very grating very quickly. Sadly, ‘Espresso Macchiato’ firmly doesn’t land for me. With the rest of the song also not being for me and/or not clicking with me, listening to this song ends up being mostly a test of my patience, regardless of the clear effort that Tommy Cash has put into finetuning the song and performance.

Estonia’s Eurovision Journey
Estonia has appeared at almost every Eurovision since their debut in 1994. They have won the contest once with Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL in 2001, singing Everybody. Other notable Estonian entrants include 3rd placer Sahlene with Runaway in 2002 and Ines with Once In A Lifetime in 2000, who placed 4th. More recently, their highest-placing entries have been Urban Symphony with Rändajad in 2009 and Ott Lepland with Kuula in 2012, both of which finished in 6th place.
In 2024, Estonia elected to send 5MIINUST and Puuluup through Eesti Laul to the Contest with “(Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi”. They successfully qualified for the final and finshed in 20th place with 37 points. The group finished with 4 points from the juries, and an additional 33 points from the televote.
