As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Norway, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Lighter” by Kyle Alessandro.
Our thoughts on “Lighter”
In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Lighter”
What did the other team members think of “Lighter”?
Shiloh: What I’ve learned in my years of Eurofandom is to never underestimate Norway’s ability to put on a stage show. The Melodi Grand Prix staging absolutely elevated this, and while there are definitely tweaks to be made before Basel, the basic elements are there and I’m sure this will be a hit amongst Eurovision’s teenage viewers this year. I have two concerns, though: firstly, while Kyle is an accomplished performer who flawlessly pulls off the dance routine, I get the sense through watching that he lacks confidence. Which makes sense, because he’s young! Additionally, “Lighter” is such a generic pop song that I wonder whether it’ll connect with audiences at Eurovision. This is a song that will make juries happy for sure, but I’d have concerns about its televote score.
Molly: Norway is one of those middle grounds that can either come in hitting and do well or end up in the middle but in this case, I am glad to say Norway picked an amazing choice. The song is so catchy and his vocals in the live performance did not disappoint. Singing with choreo can be very hard so the way he was able to sound so stable while dancing was impressive to me. The staging is simple yet brings the knight-theming together.
The song itself falls within the trendy category but in a sense, it also feels unique with adding elements of dance and EDM beats along with a dance break that doesn’t feel disjointed from the rest of the song. This will surely qualify if everything is done well when it comes to the Eurovision period. Kyle’s charisma helps carry the song and helps sell the performance for me.
Kittens: At this point I’m lucky enough to have seen this performed within 5 metres of me twice (at MelfestWKND), and I can’t tell you how much that’s changed my opinion of this. Kyle is just such a star and despite how punishing this is both vocally and with the dancing, he pulls it off in the kinda way that makes it look almost easy. I worry that the staging isn’t quite there yet, and I worry that there’s not gonna be enough to pull it out of the semi, and that it’s relatively generic pop. But I’ve really been sold on ‘Lighter’, and that’s all to do with his charisma and talent on stage.

Norway’s Eurovision Journey
The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 62 times, and made the Grand Final 59 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.
Norway’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Gåte with the song “Ulveham”. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 25th and last place in the Grand Final, receiving 16 points, 12 of which from the jury and 4 from televoters.
