German songwriter Bernd Meinunger, best known for writing the lyrics to “Ein bisschen Frieden”, has passed away at the age of 81.
Remembering a legendary songwriter
According to Bild, Meinunger died overnight between Thursday and Friday (17 October) at his home in Grunewald, Berlin, reportedly from multiple organ failure. He had been struggling with health problems for several years.
A partnership that shaped Eurovision history
Meinunger worked closely with composer Ralph Siegel for over five decades, forming one of Germany’s most successful songwriting duos. Together, they created some of the country’s most memorable Eurovision entries, including “Ein bisschen Frieden”, performed by Nicole, which won the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest in Harrogate.
The pair also collaborated on “Dschinghis Khan” (Germany 1979), “Theater” (Germany 1980), and “Johnny Blue” (Germany 1981), among others. Beyond Eurovision, Meinunger contributed lyrics to countless hits across Germany’s pop and Schlager scene.
Speaking to Bild, Siegel remembered his friend as his “creative brother”, adding:
“We spent 50 years writing our biggest hits together.”
A lasting influence on German music
Born on 30 September 1944, Meinunger shared a birthday with Siegel, a coincidence often mentioned in interviews about their long friendship. His lyrics helped define a generation of German pop and Eurovision history.
The That Eurovision Site team extends its sincere condolences to Bernd Meinunger’s family, friends, and fans. His work will continue to be celebrated for decades to come.
