For yet another year, Romania’s Eurovision story remains shrouded in uncertainty. TVR, the country’s public broadcaster, has confirmed to Eurovoix that no decision has yet been made regarding participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, set to take place in Vienna next May.

Will Romania say “yes” to Vienna?

Every autumn, fans hold their breath… And every year, Romania keeps them guessing. Since its withdrawal, the country has developed a reputation for long silences, tentative statements, and last-minute decisions that fuel anticipation across the fandom. This year is no exception.

TVR’s statement did not clarify whether the broadcaster has submitted a provisional application to the EBU, pending the General Assembly in December. For now, everything remains on standby, including hopes of a comeback for the 70th edition of Eurovision.

A rift between TVR and the music industry

Earlier this year, Dan Turturică, Director of TVR, shed light on the deeper issues behind Romania’s absence. According to him, a “deteriorating relationship” between the broadcaster and the local music industry has made participation increasingly difficult.

He also pointed out that TVR “does not have the power to select the songs in order to send the best ones to Eurovision,” adding that production houses “do not support” the broadcaster’s quality-driven approach.

Romania’s Eurovision Journey

Romania joined the Eurovision family in the Eastern wave of enlargement, making their debut in 1994. Their entry – Dan Bittman’s “Dincolo de nori” – finished in 21st place with a total of 14 points. At the introduction of semi-finals, Romania found their stride and were present in every Eurovision final until 2018. Romania’s best result is third place, scored twice in 2005 and 2010 respectively.

In 2023, Romania was represented by Theodor Andrei with his song – “D.G.T. (Off and On)”. Performing at the second semi-final in Liverpool, Romania failed to qualify for the final. At the close of voting in the semi-final, Romania finished joint last, scoring 0 points from the televote.
