A new survey conducted by Norstat on behalf of NRK, the Norwegian public broadcaster, reveals that the majority of Norwegians oppose the participation of Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.
Key Findings
- Approximately six out of ten respondents believe Israel should not be allowed to compete in the 2026 contest.
- Around 40% of those surveyed say that if Israel participates, then NRK should not take part in Eurovision itself.
- The poll comes amid ongoing controversy over Israel’s involvement in Eurovision.
A general pressure
Spain, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland might withdraw in case of an Israeli participation. Even former NRK employees urge a boycott of Eurovision 2026, and it’s unknown if the list will grow further. The participation list will only be confirmed after the General Assembly on 10 December, and once entry fees are paid
Norway’s Eurovision journey
The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 62 times and made the Grand Final 59 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.
Norway’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Kyle Alessandro with the song “Lighter”. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 18th in the Grand Final, receiving 89 points, 22 of which from the jury and 67 from televoters.
