The 2024 entries
alyona alyona x KLER – “Запроси мене”
We got some more excellent new music from alyona alyona this month. “Запроси мене” (Ask me out) sees one half of Ukraine’s 2024 duo join up with KLER for a great combination of different sounds. alyona alyona sounds as forceful yet also more vulnerable than ever, while KLER’s ethereal vocals pierce through the pounding beat in her sections.
MEGARA – “Cicatrices”
Finally back with some new music are MEGARA. The San Marino-representing Spanish band write in the press release for this song that the process of getting here wasn’t easy, but that they managed to come back with the kind of epic, special track that their fans deserve. Did they succeed? I’ll leave that for you to decide, but I think “Cicatrices” is a fun song that feels like a more polished version of the familiar MEGARA sound, even if it has maybe ever so slightly lost its edge in the process for me.
Donnie & Joost Klein – “Boerenland”
It hasn’t been long since his album, but Joost Klein is back in the round-up already with a collab. He joins forces with Donnie, a Dutch rapper who he released a mixtape with back in 2018 and is one of Joost’s go-to writing partners. “Boerenland” (Farmland) is then what one might expect from Joost Klein: personal lyrics half-sang, half-rapped over some beats.
KUKU$ x BABY LASAGNA – “BAM BAM BIRA”
Going for something a bit different even though it also feels like it fits right in with the rest of his discography is Baby Lasagna. He worked with Croatian trap group KUKU$ this month to create “BAM BAM BIRA”, with Mr. Lasagna mostly taking on the choruses.
İlkin Dövlətov – “Qınama Məni”
The artist who just refuses to leave the recording booth is back once more, as İlkin Dövlətov this month released new music in the form of “Qınama Məni” (Don’t Condemn Me). This feels like a slower and more classical track even by İlkin standards despite it being, as far as I can tell, a new song.
Natalia Barbu – “Flori de Liliac”
“Flori de Liliac” (Lilac Flowers) are the name of the game on Natalia Barbu’s new single. This feels like a fun throwback, combining traditional elements with electronic beats in the kind of haphazard way we haven’t seen much since the early 10s, leading to an entertaining and highly listenable end result.
Oge, Marina Satti – “COSMOS”, Marina Satti – “POP TOO” (LP)
The roll-out of new music ahead of Marina Satti’s new album has now finally come to a close. Her follow up to P.O.P., the EP/mini LP she released last year, is imaginatively called “POP TOO” and includes a healthy amount of previously released tracks and new songs.
Besides the album, Marina Satti also appeared on the song “COSMOS” by Oge.
ISAAK – “…would i be yours?” (EP), David Puentez x Isaak Guderian – “Baby Steps”
Germany’s ISAAK released new music twice this month. First was his EP “…would i be yours?”, which was swiftly followed by a collab with German DJ David Puentez.
Kaleen – “Heart In Stereo”
Thank god this isn’t a cover of “Stereo Hearts” like I first feared when I saw the song title. Kaleen instead serves up another slick piece of pop music that is a pleasant minor throwback musically while still feeling like it makes sense here and now.
Sarah Bonnici – “IS THIS HOW IT ENDS?”
As her time as Malta’s most recent artist to be on a Eurovision stage comes to an end, Sarah Bonnici gets contemplative. “IS THIS HOW IT ENDS?” sees Sarah provide an emotional performance on this heartbreaking ballad.
Aiko – “Mi Amor”
Finally, Aiko is also back with some new music! Her latest single, “Mi Amor”, released at the end of April and you can read more about it here:
