The Winners

Nemo – “Satellite”, “Casanova”

Our current reigning treats us to two pieces of new music this month. Well, as long as you use Spotify at least. Spotify single “Satellite” is a fascinating take on Lena’s winning Eurovision song, which celebrates its 15th birthday this year (wow are we all getting old).

“Casanova” meanwhile is a mix of musical moods and styles while being unmistakably Nemo. Their voice takes almost a 70s style inflection on this very fun, if musically chaotic, track.

VLADA K feat. Kalush – “Диваки”

Last time I wrote about Kalush (sans Orchestra) was all the way back in February, an almost unprecedented break from the always productive group. But fret not, because this month they teamed up with singer VLADA K for the track “Диваки” (Weirdos). This is the rare song where Kalush are the featured artist, although that presents less of a sonic shift than you might think. While VLADA K clearly takes centre stage with her clear poppy vocals and production, the moment Kalush fully hop into the track this fits right in with much of their own recent discography and KALUSHcollab project.

SÍLVIA & SALVADOR – “Ben poca cosa tens”

Sílvia Pérez Cruz, also known just as SÍLVIA, has won more awards than you can shake a stick at. This month she teamed up with Salvador Sobral for the song “Ben poca cosa tens” (You have very little). The song is a gorgeous and lush, yet small and delicate piece, with the lyrics coming from a poem by Miquel Martí i Pol.

Charlotte Perrelli, Johnny Logan – “Have I Told You Lately (feat. Åsa Jinder)”

Two winners in the form of Charlotte Perrelli and the OG double-winner Johnny Logan team up for this slow easy listening lovejam. Well sung and dangerously schmaltzy, this could’ve come straight from the late 80s or early 90s. This is distinctly not for me but I can totally see some people really connect with this. The little Nyckelharpa solo is also a very fun touch.

SELIN & Sertab Erener – “Son Damla”

Sertab is back with even more new music! “Son Damla” (The Last Drop) was written by Selin and Sertab together with the song’s producer Emre Kula. The track is a classic rock-tinged duet that gives both singers the space to show off their powerful vocals and just how good they sound when singing together.

Emmelie de Forest – “Into the Moon” (LP)

Pre-release songs and national final appearances have all built to this: a new album by Emmelie de Forest! The 2013 winner treats us to a 14 track effort (or 12, not counting the short intro and interlude) that is chockablock of the retro-tinged gentle pop that the singer has been making her brand in recent years.

Conchita Wurst – “Mrs Thomas” (EP)

Remember Frau Thomas? It seems that Conchita Wurst isn’t done reinventing the wheel yet as she now serves up the EP “Mrs Thomas”. The EP includes 4 songs, including an acoustic take on Conchita’s 2012 national final effort “That’s What I Am” and an orchestral version of last month’s “Waters Run Deep” among others.

Nigar Jamal – “Unutsan”

Formerly Nikki of Ell & Nikki is back with another solo outing. “Unutsan” is a jazzy ballad with traditional Azeri influences, making it a great fit for Nigar Jamal’s voice.
