The Winners

Kalush Orchestra – “Це любов”

Kalush Orchestra follow into the footsteps of George Harrison in declaring that “Це любов” (This is love). Musically this track is absolutely excellent, with this slower tempo really doing it for me, while lyrically it is about the importance and enduring strength of true love.

Dolly Parton feat. Måneskin – “Jolene”

Now this is a tricky one to cover, as there is no official version of it available for me to show you. You see, Dolly Parton released an album called “Rockstar” which sees her making rock music for the first time in her career (there is a longer and fascinating story behind this album that I can’t and won’t get into right now). Anyway, a month after the 30 track star-studded (Stevie Nicks! Joan Jett! Elton John!) behemoth dropped, Dolly Parton released a download exclusive version, only available via her website, that includes two more tracks. One of them is a new version of Jolene, featuring Italian winners Måneskin. And with it being download exclusive, well, I can’t exactly link you to a version, now can I? For big fans of Dolly the album is definitely worth a purchase, and “Jolene” (obviously) is an excellent addition to the tracklist.

Charlotte Perrelli – “I’m Beginning To See The Light”, “At Last”

Charlotte Perrelli closes out the year with two classy covers of two classy classics. “I’m Beginning To See The Light” is Charlotte slightly amping up the holiday factor of the track popularized by Ella Fitzgerald. “At Last” sees Charlotte taking a stab at the musical track that was most famously performed by Etta James, and also saw commercial success as recorded by Céline Dion and Beyoncé.

Marija Serifovic – “DOLAZI LJUBAV”

“DOLAZI LJUBAV” (LOVE IS COMING), 2008 winner Marija Serifovic proclaims on her new uplifting ballad. Attentive readers might now raise the question: wait, isn’t that the title track of her latest album, which came out back in October? Understandable question, but no. While that album did carry the same name, it did not have this track on it. Marija decided to hold of on releasing the track until the birth of her son Mario, releasing it as her first gift to him.

Linda Martin – “Downtown” (EP)

Oops, I missed something! Linda Martin has asked why her, she was waiting at non-existent Terminal 3, and now she is “Downtown”. The song is released as an EP that consists of four incredibly different mixes of the same track.
