Merry FiKmas and happy new year! 2023 is wrapping up and 2024 is about to barge in, and a lot of Eurovision news has dropped or happened this month. The music releases are continuing apace too, so let’s get ready for another Eurovision music round-up! In this edition: enough rock to listen to around the clock, a 2024 artist, and THE Dolly Parton. And, again, no Christmas music because that has come and gone already.
The 2023 entries
Lord Of The Lost – “Weapons Of Mass Seduction” (LP)
It’s here, it’s weird, it’s everything I dreamed it would be. The Lord of the Lost cover double-album (which saw its first single released last month) is finally here. For lovers of Lord Of The Lost, rock covers, and/or strange mash-ups, this truly is the perfect album. Personal highlights are their takes on Amy Macdonald’s “This Is The Life” and Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World,” but with everything from “Bad Romance” to “[I Just] Died In Your Arms Tonight” and so much more on offer (22 tracks total, including one with Anica Russo), there is so much great music on here. Record of the month!
WISBORG feat. Chris Harms – “Im freien Fall”, Rain Diary feat. Chris Harms – “You & I”, Joachim Witt feat. Chris Harms – “Elektrosexuell”
Chris Harms didn’t stop there though, far from it. In what must be one of the busiest months for one artist I have covered so far, the lead singer of Lord Of The Lost also featured on three other songs. There is the powerful goth-rock track “Im freien Fall” (In freefall) with WISBORG, who opened for LOTL this year. Finnish winterwave (a melancholic take on alt-rock, if I had to describe it quickly) rockers Rain Diary recruited Chris for some vocal work on “You & I”. Finally, Chris joined the one and only Joachim Witt on his track “Elektrosexuell” (Electrosexual)/
Elastinen – “Toiset samanlaiset” (feat. Käärijä)
Speaking of collabs, Käärijä featured this month on Elastinen’s new song “Toiset samanlaiset” (Similar others). The familiar energy returns, but this time mixing with a moodier undertone and giving way to an honest to goodness house beat at times.
Albina Kelmendi – “Pyes veten”, “Kenge e pa kryer”, “A thua”
Giving us three songs for one this month is Albina Kelmendi. “Pyes veten” (I ask myself) is a gentle acoustic guitar ballad written and produced by Bujar Kelmendi (the dad of Familja Kelmendi). He also produced, but relinquished writing duties to others, for “Kenge e pa kryer” (Unfinished song), which is a little more dramatic in its sound while still being driven by acoustic guitars. But the true drama comes with her version of “A thua”. Not only is brother Albin playing in the music video, but Bujar kills it on the electric guitar!
Blanka – “Rodeo (Alle Farben Remix)” and “Rodeo (Stadiumx Remix)”
Meanwhile, over at the remix section of the music releases you find Blanka, whose track “Rodeo” gets two new version a few months since releasing. First up was Alle Farben, who brings quite the beat to the track. Meanwhile, Stadiumx opted to make the song feel faster and throws in a bit of a drop for good measure.
Joker Out – “Live From Arena Stozice” (LP)
Meanwhile Joker Out opted to release live versions of all their songs, releasing a full recording of their Arena Stožice gig in Ljubljana. 22 tracks worth of Joker Out is presented here, with Eurovision entry “Carpe Diem” closing it all off. Energetic, loud, and fun.
Sudden Lights – “Zaļais teātris” (LP)
And it’s also a live album by fellow 2023 fan favourites Sudden Lights! Find out more about “Zaļais teātris” (Green theatre) down below:
