Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe
As Eurovision fans (and some who aren’t) know, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big- and small-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here is some of the best new music by Eurovision-adjacent acts.
m els – “Same Old Stories”
We start this beginning of the end with “Same Old Stories”. This time, those stories are penned by m els, Stig Rästa (MP – Eesti 200), and others. The result is a sing-along, stomp-clap country adjacent track with lyrics about falling for the “Same Old Stories” and lies.
Typeline & Elisabeth Tiffany – “Flames”
Round-up fave Elisabeth Tiffany teams up with Estonian producer duo Typeline to present us the drum and bass “Flames”. The song originally started life as a remix of “Water” by Tyla when Elisabeth and Oskar of Typeline were at university together. Over time, that grew and evolved into this original song, which Elisabeth described as being a challenging song to write for as it is in a new genre for her.
Isabella Kearney – “Adult Lullabies”(EP)
If you are looking for some “Adult Lullabies”, Isabella Kearney has got you covered. This EP includes “Hurts Different” and 4 more tracks. While Isabella’s alt-folk minimalist tendencies are present throughout, closer “Lost Boy” sees her go for a beat in a fascinating poppier take on her sound.
Sinerģija – “Gaismu tumsā”
Looking for something a bit more out there? Sinerģija continue their constant evolution of their world music sound with “Gaismu tumsā” (Light in the darkness), an ethereal track that feels disconnected from any specific time or place, leading to a mesmerizing piece of music.
Bel Tempo – “Musician”
Let me be completely honest here: “Musician” doesn’t hit nearly as hard for me as Bel Tempo’s previous round-up appearance “Sandy Lane”. This altrock-meets-industrial track is still a great listen though and shows just how much this duo manages to be a musical chameleon. Besides “Musician”, they also released the track “12°C” this month.
Márcia – “Ana Márcia” (LP)
We can’t have a TES round-up without something Portuguese, and this month that means we get to enjoy this absolute gentle treat of an album that is “Ana Márcia” by Márcia. The album consists of three chapters exploring childhood, blossoming love and heartbreak, and motherhood and how that completes the cycle. With 13 tracks to pick from, this musical memoir is a gorgeous gentle affair and album of the month!
ANKA – “ETHNO PHONK” (EP)
What is “ETHNO PHONK”, you ask? This EP by ANKA answers that question with attitude as strong beats and traditional musical elements battle it out over the course of 6 way-too-short tracks. It’s a little ethnic, a bit funky, and kinda punky. It’s Ethno Phonk, and also the EP of the month!
Frida Gold – “Dieses Gefühl”
We see Frida Gold appear back-to-back in the round-up thanks to “Dieses Gefühl” (This Feeling). The catchy chorus creates a nostalgic yet current atmosphere as the duo effortlessly traverses different eras of club pop on this track.
