With all Eurovision songs selected and the pre-party season about to kick off, you’d be forgiven for not paying attention to all the amazing new releases this month. Forgiven, but still making a grave error, as there has been a lot of great new music to come out of the Extended Eurovision Universe this month. So welcome to this edition of the round-up, where I catch you up on all the best and biggest new releases you might have missed. In this edition chock-full of new Eurovision music: longing, experimenting with genre, and another deluge of collabs.

The 2023 entries

Luke Black – “Chainsaws In Paradise”

The 2024 edition of Pesma za Evroviziju not only saw Teya Dora winning and being selected for Eurovision, but also saw the debut of Luke Black’s new song “Chainsaws In Paradise”. The song sees Luke further experiment with genres, with elements of progressive metal and industrial music showing up in this powerful track that is easily Luke’s hardest and least poppy affair.

Diljá – “Einhver”

Diljá is looking for “Einhver” (Someone) on her new ballad. This slow, piano-led ballad is a real vocal showcase for the Icelandic singer, who shows off the lovely range of her powerful, slightly raspy voice. Diljá co-wrote the track with the song’s producer Pálmi Ragnar Ásgeirsson (“Power”, BRÍET, The Saturdays).

TVORCHI – “Два озера повні сліз”

“Два озера повні сліз” (Two lakes full of tears) is the evocative and poetic name of TVORCHI’s new song. The track is originally by Kuzma Skryabin (yes, of Skryabin fame) and now has been remade by TVORCHI for the film “Я, “Побєда” і Берлін” (Me, “Victory”, and Berlin). This is not the first time that TVORCHI recorded for an OST, and it also is a great retro-inspired addition to TVORCHI’s rapidly growing Ukrainian language discography.

GANDIM – “Quase nos 40 (feat. Mimicat)”

Mimicat features on “Quase nos 40” (Almost 40) on the new track by rapper GANDIM as both reflect on getting older and the uncertainties and anxieties that can come along with that. The Portuguese singer lends her beautiful voice to the chorus, in which she sings about suddenly feeling like you’ve hit the midpoint of your life. The song was written by GANDIM, who has worked with many names familiar to Eurovision and Festival da Canção fans (such as Bábara Tinoco, Cláudia Pascoal, Diogo Piçarra, and others).

Sudden Lights – “Eastern European Dream”

Sudden Lights sing about the “Eastern European Dream” on their latest song. It’s an excellent slice of indie rock that sees the band sing about the historical burdens on the shoulders of young people living in the Baltic states and the anxieties and tensions that come along with that. As the band write on Facebook: “American dream might be becoming rich and famous, this is the eastern european dream- we just want to be free”. A real contender for my Song of the Month.

Albina Kelmendi – “DADA”

After putting out three songs together with (some of) her family in December, Albina Kelmendi is now back with a solo project entitled “DADA”. The song is another strong Balkan-influenced ballad that relies heavily on Albina’s amazing vocals. The track was written by producer Enis Mullaj (“Duje”, “Emri Im“, Aurela Gace) and Eriona Rushiti (“Duje”, “Bota ime“, MIRUD).

TEYA – “Behind The Scenes”

TEYA is giving us a peek “Behind The Scenes” ahead of her upcoming EP “Grandma On The Dancefloor”. This pounding, moody altpop track sees one half of the “Who The Hell Is Edgar” team sing about the real life behind the scenes of social media. Her look in the accompanying music video, especially that curly gray wig placed lazily atop her red hair, is truly a sight to behold. In what might be a sign of things to come, the song was written by TEYA, Elsie Bay (yes, her), and the song’s producer Tom Oehler (“Watergun”, “The Code”, “Sister”).
