📺 EBU releases viewing figures for Eurovision 2024

Nearly two weeks on from Nemo’s win at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, the EBU have now revealed the viewing figures and social media statistics of the contest.

Broken several records

The EBU have revealed that they broke several records for the 2024 contest with the executive producer stating:

“I am so proud of our team, who worked with such dedication and passion towards the goal of delivering three fantastic shows for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The hosts, Petra Mede and Malin Åkerman, the participating artists, the interval acts and our set and lighting design – we believe it all came together with huge success and took the Eurovision Song Contest to the next level. It is a breathtaking thought that 163 million viewers watched the shows and that people from over 150 countries were engaged in voting, United By Music.”

In addition to the viewing figures, the organisers have also revealed that approximately 82,000 visitors came to the village in the heart of Malmö. Regarding the voting, the EBU have revealed that they received votes from 156 countries, with Bulgaria, Canada, Hungary, Mexico, Romania, Slovakia, South Africa, Turkey, the UAE, and the United States being the countries that sent the most votes.

2024 Viewing figures

The EBU has revealed that it received a headline figure of 163 million views for the 2024 contest; up 1 million viewers compared to the previous year, with a reach of over 150 countries.

Focusing on individual markets the contest saw 2.3 million viewers (87.3% share) in host country Sweden. First and second place Switzerland and Croatia both saw their highest ever recorded shares at 723,000 and 1.1 million viewers respectively. Outwith the high placed finishers, the big five countries Germany, France, and the United Kingdom saw 8.1 million, 5.4 million, and 7.7 million viewers respectively. Additionally, the EBU have stated that in 18 of the 37 participating countries, they received over half of the viewing shares from the contest.

Social Media Stats

In addition to the viewing figures released, the EBU has also detailed the engagement the contest had across social media; citing a record year for engagement.

On the contest’s flagship app, the EBU have states that 2.5 million people used it over the course of the contest. For the 2024 rehearsals, the Eurovision team migrated their live blog to social media site Reddit which saw the community r/eurovision receiving an uptick of 27.8% in engagement and 71.8% in views. On other social media account, the EBU have stated they received over half a billion views on their tiktok account, and almost half a billion views across social media on videos posted. The live shows received 7.3 million views via the official Eurovision Youtube account in markets it could broadcast live.

The story of Eurovision 2024

The Nordic country will host the 68th edition of the competition. This is after Loreen’s historic win at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. One month after the 2023 contest took place, SVT revealed the first names of the Core Team that will work on the competition. SVT completed the team in September.

In July 2023, after a shortlist of four cities, the EBU announced that Malmö would host Eurovision 2024. The city will spend up to €2.5 million for the contest. Additionally, they will have 600 volunteers working for the show.

In total, 37 countries participated in the Contest. Luxembourg returned, whilst Romania withdrew. ‘United By Music’ became the permanent slogan for the Contest. The show had ‘The Eurovision Lights’ as the theme art.  Florian Wieder and Fredrik Stormby designed the stage, revealed in December.
