🎶 Eurovision music round-up: May 2023

Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe

As any Eurovision megafan knows, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here are some of the best new releases by Eurovision-adjacent acts:

Chérine – “l’âge que je n’ai pas”

Chérine very well might have been the first to call Gustaph by the now nigh-inescapable moniker “good daddy in a hat“. The Eurosong BE contestant has now released new track “l’âge que je n’ai pas” (the age that I am not). Musically, it fits right in line with tracks such as her previous hit “ça m’ennuie pas,” while lyrically it deals with questions about her age and criticisms of sounding too young. Oh, and the dolphin noises at the beginning and end of the track? That’s Chérine herself, who has the uncanny ability to imitate the interesting sea mammals.

Tanxugueiras – “Aire”

My favourites from the 2022 National Final season Tanxugueiras had a busy year last year, including the release of their third album and a stunning collab with Rozalén. They’re almost done with announced gigs for the year, but the party doesn’t stop quite yet, as the Galician trio have released new bop “Aire”. The song sees the group further experiment with their sound. In other Tanxu news: they won two awards at the MIN Awards, which celebrates independent music productions in Spain. Their album “Diluvio” garnered Tanxugueiras the prizes for “Best Roots Music Album:”” and “Best Album in Galician”. The ceremony also saw awards go to names such as Rigoberta Bandini and, in the international category, Irish post-punkers Fontaines D.C.

ZEF e MARZ – “Tilt (feat. Elisa & La Rappresentante di Lista)”

Two Sanremo 2022 fan favourites for the price of one: La Rappresentante di Lista appear together with Elisa on the new track “Tilt” by production duo ZEF e MARZ. It’s a banging indie-pop party track about the illusion of love. The song represents the first time ZEF and MARZ step out of the production booth to present themselves as lead artists of a track, and is the first of a music project where they want to try new sounds with established artists.

Shari – “Alice in Hell” (EP)

Speaking of Sanremo faves: Shari has released new EP “Alice in Hell”. As always with Sanremo artists, I didn’t hear a song until after the contest and “Egoista” hit me hard, it’s a great song. This EP is her second release post-Egoista, with track “Ti uccido” having come out last month. “Alice in Hell” features three new tracks. “Ohana” is a tense, building electro-pop track. “Mi sanguina il cuore” (My heart is bleeding) goes into a slightly more danceable direction while adding also adding ballad elements. And the EP ends on a dark, brooding, but short note with “Ki 666”. All three songs have videos to go along with them, all (of course) influenced by Alice in Wonderland.

LUMA – “Porque”

Last year, LUMA gained a lot of fans on their journey through Slovenia’s EMA Freš and subsequent fourth place in National Final EMA. “Porque” is their second release since their competing entry “All In”. The song is, as the title already implies, in Spanish. Musically the track is every bit as moody and mysterious as “All In,” although with multiple more Western Mediterranean music elements being added to the mix as well.

The Just Dancers – “Te Deum Eurovision Theme (Just Dance Remix)”

Just Dance and Eurovision: together at last? There was quite some rejoicing (and some confusion) when the partnership between the game and the Contest was announced for Season 2 of Just Dance 2023 Showdown. A true variety of songs, from 2022 bops “Slo Mo” and “Trenulețul” to 2010 winner “Satellite” and deeper cuts such as a 2019 track “Ma Itù” by Norway’s 2011 representative Stella Mwangi are currently available to be played. The season, which also includes some non-Eurovision related bangers such as QUeen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” runs until July 12. Four tracks ( “Slo Mo,” “Give That Wolf A Banana,” “Trenulețul,” and a surprise track) will be available permanently on Just Dance+, with the other songs available for a limited time only. And what does all that have to do with new Eurovision music, I hear you ask? Well, a special Just Dance remix of our international anthem “Te Deum” was released to celebrate this Showdown Season.
